Program History

The Garwin Family Foundation (GFF), established in 1993, has underwritten the following programs:

 

Southern Illinois University (SIU) Schools of Law and Medicine

  • MD/JD Scholarships
    SIU’s dual-degree program has produced 37 graduates with combined degrees in law and medicine since 1989, and 23 of those students have been GFF scholarship recipients.
  • Garwin Distinguished Professor of Law and Medicine
    Chairholders of this SIU School of Law endowed professorship, underwritten by the GFF, were Dr. Bryan Liang (2000-2003) and Professor Marshall Kapp (2004-2010).
  • Grayson/Garwin Distinguished Visitors in Law and Medicine
    Between 1996 and 2013, the GFF brought eight leading academic thinkers in health law to the SIU School of Law for extended teaching visits.
  • Southern Illinois Healthcare Professor of Law
    The GFF has helped support this distinguished professorship held by W. Eugene Basanta at the SIU School of Law.
  • Professional Responsibility Day
    The GFF had helped underwrite this annual educational session that brought together first-year students of law and medicine at SIU for the examination of professional ethics in both fields.
  • Grayson Lectures
    Since 1996, the GFF had sponsored this lectureship that focused on current events at the nexus of health law and policy.  
  • Ryan Bioethicist in Residence
    The GFF supports an annual series of lectures held at the SIU Schools of Law and Medicine by a scholar in medical ethics.
