Elaina Xaio is enrolled in the Artificial Intelligence course at Stanford’s Pre-Collegiate Studies program. During her first week, Elaina participated in Zoom sessions from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at the Carbondale Community School Library, followed by office hours with her instructor.

For many it is a time of sleeping in, enjoying a local swimming hole and just taking it easy, focusing on anything but academics. But for 10 students affiliated with Carbondale Community High School, summer is a time to explore topics ranging from number theory to artificial intelligence and pharmacology to climate change.

Alexander Brown describes his creative experience with a pre-collegiate sculpture course at the Rhode Island School of Design. “We start off the week by watching an hour-long slideshow presented by our teacher, Gail Dodge. We also watch a few other small videos to get us acquainted with the materials and topic of the week. The previous topic was making a sculpture with “found objects”. We could use anything that we could get our hands on to create a piece of art,” Alexander reports.

Longmei Ge reports on the Materials in Science and Engineering course at Stanford University, where she studied exoplanet and star-system research this summer. “Two recently graduated students visited one of our classes to speak to us about binary-star systems, which I thought were absolutely fascinating,” Longmei says.
