Shruti is currently in a combined BA/MD program at University of Missouri-Kansas City, and last August earned her white coat, beginning the clinical part of her education. She has been seeing patients in the outpatient internal medicine clinic once a week. This was her first actual clinical rotation as part of the team she was assigned to at her White Coat Ceremony. The teams are comprised of 3rd through 6th year students, where the more experienced students mentor newer students in both the clinic and internal medicine rotation.

In March 2019, Shruti served as finance director for the Sojourner Health Clinic—a student-run free health clinic on campus. The clinic treats the underserved, uninsured, and homeless population of downtown Kansas City while maintaining a functional interdisciplinary teaching clinic. At an annual conference held by the Society of Student-Run Free Clinics at University of Kansas School of Medicine, Shruti co-presented a research project and 2 workshops which included a presentation on a quality improvement project conducted at the clinic, a workshop on incorporating a Patient Assistance Program within a student-run free clinic to coordinate providing patients with free medications, and a “how to” workshop on building and running an austere mobile clinic.

Shruti is also interested in Pediatrics and Ob/Gyn. She joined an Ob/Gyn Interest Group as Event Organizer and has just completed her first “out-of-town” rotation, working on research at the Children’s Hospital of Illinois PICU. The research involves a retrospective analysis on the mechanical intubation guidelines and parameters of pediatric patients with severe asthma exacerbation. She is hoping to get her paper published before graduation. Next year she will have taken USMLE Step 1 and begin her core clerkships.
