Garwin Family Foundation
Talented Student Scholarship Program and Process
About the Program
The Garwin Family Foundation (GFF) program for talented high school students fosters academic excellence. We fund “stretch” summer activities on esteemed Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, and Arts (STEAM) campuses nationwide, meeting the unique educational and personal growth needs of high-achieving students in Southern Illinois.
The program supports self-directed, highly motivated students in their academic pursuits. We provide them with the necessary guidance and resources to gain self-confidence, develop academic proficiency, and build their community of student-scholars. Subsequently, they are better equipped to confront the challenges of the modern world, having honed their skills in interdisciplinary thinking, independent living, and rigorous study.
About the Process
The GFF’s acceptance process is demanding, reflecting the Foundation’s high standards. It begins with a two-part application that asks for test scores, transcripts, resumes, faculty letters of recommendation, and a letter of intent. This process rests solely on the student, who must demonstrate commitment and dedication. Scholarships are available for rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors at Carbondale, Carterville, Herrin, and Murphysboro High Schools.
After the initial application process, we invite select students to interview with the board. If accepted, students attend orientation, meet GFF alumni, and outline the summer’s requirements. With our advice, students can choose a summer program that aligns with their academic interests and abilities. We prefer residential experiences; however, on rare occasions, we will sponsor a remote or hybrid course. The GFF staff communicates with students and their faculty over the summer through weekly progress reports.
Program Conclusion
After the summer program concludes, we invite scholarship recipients to complete an evaluation survey to assess the program’s effectiveness and identify areas for improvement. Additionally, the students participate in post-program interviews and gather as a group to network and share their experiences.
