For many it is a time of sleeping in, enjoying a local swimming hole and just taking it easy, focusing on anything but academics. But for 10 students affiliated with Carbondale Community High School, summer is a time to explore topics ranging from number theory to artificial intelligence and pharmacology to climate change.
Ten Carbondale High School Students Earn Garwin Family Foundation Scholarships For Summer 2021 Enrichment Opportunities
Ten outstanding Carbondale high school students have earned merit-based scholarships from the Garwin Family Foundation (GFF) to attend highly selective enrichment programs in STEM and the Fine Arts.
GFF Alumni Maya Benyas, Charlie Du, and Eli Tsung named as National Merit Semifinalists
The Garwin Family Foundation congratulates Maya Benyas, Charlie Du, and Eli Tsung recently named as National Merit Semifinalists. They will join 16,000 semifinalists competing for Class of 2021 National Merit Scholarships.
Alexander Brown attends a pre-collegiate sculpture course at RISD.
Alexander Brown describes his creative experience with a pre-collegiate sculpture course at the Rhode Island School of Design. “We start off the week by watching an hour-long slideshow presented by our teacher, Gail Dodge. We also watch a few other small videos to get us acquainted with the materials and topic of the week. The previous topic was making a sculpture with “found objects”. We could use anything that we could get our hands on to create a piece of art,” Alexander reports.
Longmei Ge, a second time GFF recipient, attends Materials in Science and Engineering at Stanford University.
Longmei Ge reports on the Materials in Science and Engineering course at Stanford University, where she studied exoplanet and star-system research this summer. “Two recently graduated students visited one of our classes to speak to us about binary-star systems, which I thought were absolutely fascinating,” Longmei says.
Michelle Wang attends the AI4ALL summer camp program at Stanford University.
Michelle Wang has been attending the AI4ALL course at Stanford University via Zoom sessions this summer. “The first week of Stanford AI4ALL has been amazing! I have learned so much about AI, its impact and applications. I have also met many amazing students from around the world,” Michelle exclaims!
Lauren Fakhoury studies Brain and Behavior at the University of Michigan Math and Science Scholars Program.
Lauren is enrolled in the Math and Science Scholars Program at the University of Michigan, where she has been studying Brain and Behavior. Lauren has been enjoying the class taught by her instructor Dr. Cummings, whose passion has made the course very engaging.
Charlie Du attends the PROMYS Bridge program at Boston University.
Charlie Du is attending the PROMYS Bridge Program at Boston University via remote Zoom sessions. The class of 60 students included many participants from last year’s program that Charlie was happy to meet again.
Elaina Xaio studies Introduction to Programming at Stanford University.
Elaina Xaio is enrolled in the Introduction to Programming Pre-Collegiate Studies course at Stanford University. Classes are held online via Zoom sessions and Elaina has been working with classmates from around the globe.
Maya Benyas attends Berklee Boston Conservatory’s Film Scoring Program.
Maya Benyas is really enjoying her first week at the Berklee Boston Conservatory’s Film Scoring Program. She is one of approximately 100 students participating in the program. Maya describes the course as an “umbrella” program consisting of 3 tracks: Film Scoring 101, Music Composition for Film and TV, and Orchestration 1. Maya chose the “Music Composition for Film and TV” track.

Jason Qin learns Computational Geometry and Algebra 1.5 at Awesome Math
Jason Qin has enrolled in Awesome Math’s Computational Geometry and Algebra 1.5 online courses. He has learned much during his first week and says that the courses have really broadened his perspective on math. The class schedule runs from Monday through Friday, with 2-hour lectures and 1-hour problem sessions hosted via Zoom.
