Maya has been highly involved in Math Team this semester, receiving 7th, 3rd, 3rd, and 2nd place in competition, uses her love of the subject as a tutor at Carbondale Middle School. Of her many honors classes, math and physics are among her favorites.
She attended the Lifesavers retreat for a second year, but as a Group Leader. “It was a really great experience, as I got to meet and establish closer connections with many new people. It was even better than my first year.”
Her audition for the Illinois Music Educator’s Orchestra, resulted in her being selected to be Principal Cello for a third consecutive year, and she continues play with Southern Illinois Symphony Orchestra. She is working on the Haydn Cello Concerto in D Major, as well as Bach Suite in C major and plans on performing those pieces as part of a junior cello recital in the spring.
Maya is also an athlete, placing first in freestyle, second in backstroke at the IHSA Girl’s Swimming Sectionals. In medley relays, she is content to have gotten fairly close to her best times, with her team placing fourth.
Last year, Maya received the Gold Award in the National French Contest, a nation-wide French exam, at the French 3 level. As a result, she will travel this spring with the French Class to the Concordia Village French Immersion Weekend in Minnesota.
