(Carbondale, Illinois; May 17, 2016) The Garwin Family Foundation (GFF) awarded six merit-based sponsorships to enable high-achieving Carbondale Community High School students to attend outstanding summer enrichment programs focused on the arts, sciences, or math.
“To my knowledge, the Garwin Family Foundation Student Sponsorship Program for Talented Students in Arts, Sciences, and Math is the only program of its kind,” said Steve Murphy, CCHS superintendent. “Through the continuous efforts and generous donations of the Foundation, CCHS students are given truly life-changing opportunities at a pivotal point in their development. Our students are beyond fortunate to be able to apply for these sponsorships, and, as Superintendent, I am beyond grateful to the Garwin family for providing such a unique opportunity for our students.”
This year marks the third year of scholarship awards made by the GFF through its landmark program.
“The newest crop of GFF scholarship recipients is every bit as sterling as those from years past,” said Marsha Ryan, MD, JD, FACS, GFF director. “These young people are the best and the brightest, and we are convinced that they will change the world.”
The following CCHS students were awarded enrichment program sponsorships for the summer of 2016:
- Ryder Hales, a CCHS sophomore, who was approved for the recently developed Mentorship-Model Summer Internship in Culinary Arts under the direction of Lasse Sorensen of Tom’s Place in De Soto, IL, where Ryder will learn about being a professional chef;
- Ian Kinsel, a CCHS freshman, who was admitted to the Michigan Math and Science Scholars Program at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI, where he will focus on “Discrete Dynamical Systems”;
- Ananth Panchamukhi, a CCHS junior, who was accepted into the Students and Teachers as Research Scientists (STARS) program, in St. Louis, MO, where he will build hands-on research skills in biomedical engineering at Saint Louis University;
- Kian Stevens-Winston, a CCHS senior, who will participate in the newly established Mentorship-Model Summer Internship in Luthiery under the tutelage of Terry Whipple, owner of Whipple Creek Guitars in Wolf Lake, IL, where Kian will learn the art of guitar building;
- Julian Springer, a CCHS junior, who will attend the Interlochen High School Percussion Institute in Interlochen, MI; and
- Rea Yoh, a CCHS junior, who was admitted to the Pre-College Program at Brown University in Providence, RI, where she will concentrate on “Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine.”
“We are really pleased to be underwriting such prestigious educational summer experiences for these students, as we are thrilled to play even a small part in helping them hone skills and satisfy curiosities,” said Mark Garwin, MD, JD, GFF director.
The program has already proven to have had a meaningful impact on past recipients. Prior sponsorship winners have chosen to pursue undergraduate majors in the area of their GFF-sponsored programs. Some have even decided to attend the top universities where they participated in their summer enrichment studies, including the University of Chicago and the Rhode Island School of Design. Others have been admitted to outstanding educational institutions, including: the University of Notre Dame, George Washington University, Drexel University, and the six-year medical school program at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
“The CCHS community is extremely appreciative of the support that the Garwin Family Foundation offers our students to further their study in the arts, sciences, and math,” said Daniel Booth, CCHS principal. “It is amazing to see students from our school go off to the most prestigious academic institutions across the country and learn from the best in the field. Their enrichment through these programs, with the financial sponsorship awarded through the Garwin Family Foundation, is another example of why the students at CCHS can compete with any high school students in the United States on an academic level.”
The GFF, a tax-exempt operating foundation based in Carbondale, IL, was established in 1993 by Leo and Ruth Garwin. The GFF’s principle objectives are furthering study and fostering achievement in the arts and sciences, humanities, law, and medicine. In the two decades of its operation, it has underwritten many educational programs; its latest project is the CCHS Student Sponsorship Program for Talented Students in Arts, Sciences and Math.
