Gabriela has been busy since we last spoke with her. As President of National Honor Society, she led the Induction Ceremony for the incoming class at Carbondale Community High School. She also finished her last of seven college auditions at the Blair School of Music, Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee.
Gabriela recently found out that she is the Illinois District VII winner of the Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award, for which she wrote a timed “in-school” essay about patriotism, leadership, and community service. “This award puts me in the running to be the state winner,” Gabriela explains.
“Last week, I won two awards at the John A. Logan Writing Contest: 1st place in the Research category, for my essay titled “Is It Really New News?” and Judges Choice for the Personal Narrative category, for my piece titled “A Legen-dairy Dilemma,” Gabriela adds.
Gabriela was recently selected as one of 35 Stamps Scholar finalists at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Although she was not chosen as a Stamps Scholar (they choose 4 people), she was honored to be included as a finalist out of 29,000 applicants.
Later in March, Gabriela will be competing in the WYSE/ACES competition at SIU, where she is taking the math and chemistry test. She will also attend Science Olympiad, competing in Disease Detectives, Chemistry, Experimental Design, and Forensics. In addition, Gabriella will participate in a chamber music recital where she will perform with her own string quartet, and the graduate string quartet at SIU.
We are so proud of her accomplishments!
