The Garwin Family Foundation (GFF) awarded nearly $26,000 in merit-based sponsorships to enable four of Carbondale Community High School’s (CCHS’s) highest achieving students to attend outstanding summer enrichment programs focused on the arts, sciences, or math. The scholarships were given out this spring during the second year of the GFF’s CCHS Student Sponsorship Program for Talented Students in Arts, Sciences and Math.
“It is such a pleasure meeting and underwriting these CCHS students,” said Marsha Ryan, MD, JD, FACS, GFF director. “This year’s class of sponsored students constitutes a wonderful collection of dedicated, bright, young scholars. It is our hope that they will be changed by the experiences at their summer enrichment programs, and that they, in turn, will change the world—all for the better, of course.”
The GFF awarded the following CCHS students enrichment program sponsorships for the summer of 2015:
- Josie Brown, a CCHS junior, who was admitted to the Summer Quarter Undergraduate Offerings for High School Students at the University of Chicago (UC), where she will take Quantitative Modeling in Biology and From Brain to Behavior, alongside UC students, during the three-week program;
- Eric Dollinger, a CCHS junior, who was accepted to the Missouri Science & Technology Summer Research Academy in Rolla, MO, where he will get hands-on experience in mechanical engineering applications for robotics, during the six-week program;
- Ananth Panchamukhi, a CCHS sophomore, who was admitted to the Stanford Pre-Collegiate Summer Institutes High School Program, where he will focus on the Theory of Relativity for three weeks; and
- Kian Stevens-Winston, a CCHS junior, who was accepted into New York University’s (NYU’s) Tisch Summer High School Special Program, where he will participate in the recorded music offering through The Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music for four weeks.
“This program supports the best and brightest students in our local area,” said Mark Garwin, MD, JD, GFF director. “The GFF’s goal is to encourage our students in math, science and the arts to achieve greatness, and we have every confidence that this year’s scholarship winners will do just that.”
“To my knowledge, the Garwin Family Foundation Student Sponsorship Program for Talented Students in Arts, Sciences and Math is the only program of its kind,” said Steve Murphy, CCHS Superintendent. “Through the continuous efforts and generous donations of the Garwin Family Foundation, CCHS students are given truly life-changing opportunities at pivotal points in their development. Our students are beyond fortunate to be able to apply for these sponsorships, and, as Superintendent, I am beyond grateful to the Garwin family for providing such a unique opportunity for our students.”
The GFF, a tax-exempt operating foundation based in Carbondale, Illinois, was established in 1993 by Leo and Ruth Garwin. The GFF’s principle objectives are furthering study and fostering achievement in the arts and sciences, humanities, law, and medicine. In the two decades of its operation, it has underwritten many educational programs; its latest project is the CCHS Student Sponsorship Program for Talented Students in Arts, Sciences and Math.
