Sophie is attending Animation and Video Projects, plus Advanced Painting and Drawing at the Art Institute of Chicago this summer. “My pre-college is all I could ask for and more. I have two teachers and two teacher assistants to help me and the other students learn. There are about 13 students so we all get a lot of attention and help with our projects. Twice a day, we do “check-ins” to start and end our work period,” Sophie explains.
Students are given modules to work on each day, and are also able to meet with teachers either one-on-one or in groups to discuss their work. “We have lots of opportunities to ask questions and learn new things. I have already learned how to 2D animate and have made three projects as well as have learned to make and edit videos. I am currently learning story boarding and how to convey emotions through my art in video form,” Sophie adds.
At right, Sophie shares a video of one of the first animations she created in the Animation and Video Projects course. “First thing I learned was that it’s a lot harder to animate than it looks. Especially, with a time limit,” Sophie says.
In her advanced painting and drawing course, Sophie has been learning how to mix a good neutral, and techniques for painting with a limited palette. Sophie has also shared photos of her working on a class project, and a finished painting.
“I made a painting that involved me making paint bubbles and then painting trees on top of it. I am currently planning my final project for this course which I will begin next week and then will work on till the end of the course,” Sophie explains.
